TV GORD’S WHAT’S ON FOR THE WEEK OF April 17-23, 2016

Some much-anticipated new series premiere this week: The Night Manager, which stars Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman, also bring Hugh Laurie back to TV for a while; will Containment be the next evolution in the zombie apocalypse or will it be a ripoff?; and The Daily Show’s Jason Jones launches his new comedy series, The Detour. All that, and Amy Schumer’s back! Happy viewing!

Tuesday

The Night Manager – 10:00 to 11:20pm on AMC – Miniseries Premiere

Based on the 1993 John La Carré novel, this six-part serialized version of the story stars Tom Hiddleston as a former British soldier who is recruited by an intelligence operative, played by Olivia Colman (Broadchurch). His mission is to infiltrate the inner circle of an arms dealer, played by Hugh Laurie. This miniseries is updated to the present day, with references to the Arab Spring and the current Syrian refugee crisis.

Containment – 9pm on The CW – Series Premiere (premieres on Global next Monday the 25th)

A deadly outbreak in Atlanta forces a complete quarantine of the city, while police officer Lex Carnahan (David Gyasi) tries to keep the peace and doctors race to keep the epidemic from spreading.

Outlander – 10pm to 11:15 on Showcase – 2nd Season Premiere

Wednesday

Time Traveling Bong – 10:30pm on MUCH (2-part miniseries, continues on Thursday and Friday)

Cousins Jeff and Sharee find a time-traveling water-bong and get stuck bouncing around through time. (It’s probably not a coincidence that the date is 4/20.) You can watch each part on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday or watch them together on Friday from 9pm to 10:30.

Thursday

Inside Amy Schumer – 10pm on Comedy – 4th Season Premiere

The Detour – 10:30 on Comedy – Series Premiere

Jason Jones (who created this series with his wife, Samantha Bee) stars as a husband and father who takes his family on an eventful vacation in this ten-part series. The comedy is based on the real-life couple’s own experiences.

Good Witch – 7 to 9pm on W – 2nd Season Premiere (two back-to-back episodes)

Capital – 10pm on BBC Canada – Miniseries Premiere

This three-part adaptation of the John Lanchester novel follows the lives of families on a recently well-to-do street in South London, where their average homes have recently shot up in value and are now worth millions. When residents start receiving anonymous postcards that read, “We want what you have”, different people react to the disturbing situation in different ways.
