Goodbye Bobcat – Thanks for a Remarkable 30-Year Run

Yes, sports fans do give a Flying Fadoo!  For 30 years, Bob McCown has been the #1 voice in sports talk radio, sharing his strong opinions and stirring controversy with sports fans across the country.  Tomorrow, McCown will sign off for the last time as host of Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The FAN and Sportsnet 360.  At McCown’s request, there will be no fanfare or tributes during his final shows.

A pioneer in the industry, McCown was the original host of Prime Time Sports when the show launched in 1989.  Throughout his 30 years, McCown was the most listened-to sports radio personality in the country and Prime Time Sports remains #1 by a wide margin.

“Bob is an icon in this business and a legend of our format.  He built sports talk radio in Canada, and we are lucky to have had him on the mic and in the hallways over the last three decades.  Bob will be missed but his legacy will remain with us for years to come,” said Dave Cadeau, Program Director, Sportsnet 590 The FAN and National Format Director for Sports, Rogers Radio.

Added Julie Adam, SVP of Rogers Radio: “Listening to Bob is like a master class in broadcasting.  There is an immediacy and intimacy with radio, and Bob is incredibly skilled at forging that one-to-one connection.  On behalf of our entire team and all fans across the country, thank you, Bob, for 30 years of great radio.”

McCown hosted thousands of shows throughout his three decades and interviewed thousands of the biggest names in sports.  He has weighed in on every major sporting event that mattered to Canadians, including the Blue Jays back-to-back World Series titles, Donovan Bailey’s gold in Atlanta, Sidney Crosby’s golden goal at Vancouver 2010, when the Habs were the last Canadian team to hoist the Stanley Cup in 1993, and last week’s historic Raptors NBA Championship.

McCown has been recognized for his outstanding career and contributions to Canadian sports journalism at the Sports Media Canada Awards Ceremony in 2013, and was named North American Air Talent of the Year at the Rick Scott & Associates Sports Radio Conference in 2007.

“Bob McCown invented sports talk radio in Canada, period.  When a big sports story was breaking, when the home team was winning a championship or falling apart, everyone tuned in to Prime Time Sports to find out what Bob was saying.  He’s an original.  There will never be another one quite like him,” said Stephen Brunt, co-host of Prime Time Sports.

Details of a new afternoon drive show will be announced in the Fall.  In the interim, fans can continue to enjoy Prime Time Sports with a rotating roster of hosts and special guests throughout the summer.

Prime Time Sports can be heard from 4 to 7 p.m. ET on Sportsnet 590 The FAN in Toronto, as well as on numerous additional stations within the Sportsnet Radio Network. Fans can also listen at Sportsnet.ca/590, the Sportsnet App, Radioplayer Canada App, Google Home and Amazon Echo. Prime Time Sports is also simulcast on television on Sportsnet 360.
