FROM THE SPIRIT III – New Season

FROM THE SPIRIT is a series of half hour documentaries each profiling a different Aboriginal artist. Each of the artists featured have drawn heavily from the traditions of their ancestors, but have also created a visual style which is uniquely their own. Kicking off the series is a profile of one of the most acclaimed American Indian artists – Kevin Red Star (Mar. 31). The episode traces the Native American painter’s journey as an artist from his hometown of Lodgegrass, Montana to Santa Fe’s American Indian Art Institute. Produced by the First Nations company Earth Magic Media of Edmonton, AB in association with Bravo!.

Bravo! invites viewers to experience the exquisite world of classical ballet in DANCE OF MY HEART. This one-hour documentary tells the story of passion and longevity in the life of the great choreographer Alberto Alonso, creator of the Cuban classical ballet style. The film chronicles Alonso’s extraordinary contributions to the world of dance – from his earlier work with the Ballet Russes de Monte Carlo, Ballet National de Cuba, the Bolshoi Theatre, and many other national ballet companies. Above all, this is a story of love and the relationship between Alonso and Sonia Calero, who have been together for 50 years as both lovers and artists, creating a powerful body of work together.

LAUGHOLOGY is a one-hour original CTV documentary from filmmaker Albert Nerenberg that explores what laughter is, what makes individuals laugh, and the different ways it’s expressed universally. From cutting edge neuroscientists to the inventor of laughter yoga, from Christian “holy laughter” groups to living human laugh tracks. Nerenberg reveals the tremendous new interest in laughter for health, scientific examination, and mood elevation purposes. Nerenberg ultimately finds Doug Collins, the man with “the most contagious laugh in the world.”
Bravo! CeLEbrates johnny cash
Bravo! celebrates trailblazer and music icon Johnny Cash with an array of documentaries profiling the artist’s personal life and most memorable live performances, beginning with JOHNNY CASH LIVE IN MONTREUX (Mar. 22 at 9 p.m. ET). This classic concert sees the “Man in Black” singing many of his greatest hits with wife and songwriting partner June Carter Cash. In JOHNNY CASH: BEHIND PRISON WALLS (Mar. 23 at 9 p.m. ET), Cash headlines this 1977 televised concert, shot inside the Tennessee State Penitentiary in Nashville. JOHNNY CASH: THE MAN IN BLACK (Mar. 23 at 10 p.m. ET) goes back to Cash’s early days as a young boy in Arkansas and revisits the major influences and life altering events of his childhood.

This month, David Cronenberg’s (A History of Violence) award-winning film EASTERN PROMISES (Mar. 14) makes its Canadian television premiere on Bravo!. The film follows Anna, a London midwife (Naomi Watts), as she becomes entangled in a treacherous world of Russian mafia led by Nikolai, played by Oscar® nominee Viggo Mortensen, as her only ally. Next up is the classic romantic comedy SERENDIPITY (Mar. 21) starring John Cusack (2012, America’s Sweetheart) and Kate Beckinsale (Click, Underworld) as two strangers already in relationships who meet and spend a romantic evening in New York City. Concluding this month’s line-up is a Bravo! premiere of the Academy Award® -winning film LOST IN TRANSLATION (Mar. 27). Directed by Sofia Coppola, the film tells a story of an unlikely friendship between aging movie star Bob (Bill Murray) and a neglected newlywed Charlotte (Scarlett Johanson) as they meet in Tokyo, Japan.
