TV Gord’s What’s On for the week of January 17-23, 2016

The return of Agent Carter, the advent of a third DC Comics series on The CW and CTV, HBO’s anticipated new series, Billions, and Zach Galifianakis takes his shtick to FX (with a little help from Louis CK). All that, The X-Files marathon and the Critics Choice Awards! Happy viewing!

Sunday

The 21st Annual Critics Choice Awards – Red Carpet at 7pm/Awards from 8 to 11pm on A&E
TJ Miller hosts this awards show which features Amy Schumer receiving the MVP Award, JJ Abrams presenting the Genius Award to Industrial Light and Magic, and a slew of other awards, including Most Bingeworthy Show (Empire, Friends, Game of Thrones, Orange Is The New Black, Outlander and The Walking Dead).
Mercy Street – 10pm on PBS – Series Premiere
This six-episode series dramatizes events from the memoirs and letters of actual doctors and nurse volunteers at the Mansion House Hopsital in Alexandria, Virginia, during the American Civil War, starring McKinley Belcher III, Suzanne Bertish, Gary Cole, Donna Murphy and AnnaSophia Robb.
Billions – 10pm on HBO – Series Premiere
Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti star in this 12-episode series about Bobby “Axe” Axelrod, an ambitious hedge fund king (Lewis) who survived the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and became a sympathetic character in the public’s eyes. In reality, he’s a criminal dodging the law. Giamatti plays the United States Attorney who is on Axelrod’s tail.

Monday

War & Peace – 9 to 11pm on A&E – Four-Part Miniseries
Tolstoy’s epic tale surrounding the French invasion of Russia begins with Napoleon’s invasion of Austria. Stars Paul Dano, Lily James, James Norton and Gillian Anderson.

Tuesday

Marvel’s Captain America: 75 Heroic Years – 8pm on ABC
This special traces the history of Captain America and how the character has reflected the times from 1941 to present day, featuring interviews with members of the Marvel family, including Stan Lee, Joe Quesada, Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet and Jeph Loeb.
Marvel’s Agent Carter – 9 to 11pm on ABC/CTV – Second Season Premiere
Peggy moves to Los Angeles to investigate an unusual homicide, reuniting her with some familiar faces.
Mr. D – 9:30 on CBC – 5th Season Premiere

Thursday

DC Legends of Tomorrow – 8pm on The CW/8:31 on CTV – Series Premiere
This spinoff from Arrow and The Flash finds time-traveler Rip Hunter realizing heroes alone are not enough to prevent an impending catastrophe, so he goes back in time to pull together a ragtag team of divergent talents from across the DC Universe. Arthur Darvill, Wentworth Miller, Victor Garber, Brandon Routh and Caity Loitz are among the stars.
Baskets – 10pm on FX – Series Premiere
In this series co-created by Louis CK and Zach Galifianakis, Zach stars as Chip Baskets, a man with a dream to become a classically trained French clown in Paris. Things don’t go as well as he’d like, though, largely because of an impenetrable language barrier. With his lack of success overseas and mounting financial problems, Chip moves back home to Bakersfield, California, which presents other challenges for the wannabe jester.

Saturday

The X-Files – 11am to 10pm on Space
In anticipation of the new X-Files (premiering the following night), a marathon of episodes from the series’ original run, kicking off with the first three episodes of the series and continuing with key episodes from all seven seasons.
