CBC Honours the Legacy of Nelson Mandela: 1918-2013

With the passing of Nelson Mandela, South Africa’s first black president, CBC News looks back at the legacy of the global icon of freedom. The Nobel Peace Prize winner became a symbol of resistance to apartheid and a champion of human rights around the world. On TV, Radio, and online, CBC News has continuing coverage of the man, his legacy, and enduring impact on the world he left behind.

Tonight on DOC ZONE at 9 p.m./9:30 p.m. NT on CBC-TV, a special presentation of Madiba: The Life and Times of Nelson Mandela. From his birth, 95 years ago in the Xhosa homeland, to his final days in the hearts and minds of citizens the world over, Nelson Mandela was a Nobel prize-winning freedom fighter who devoted his life to the pursuit of justice for all. DOC ZONE‘s updated consideration of the Life of Madiba includes interviews with Mandela and dozens of key figures in his nation’s history. And CBC News Network’s THE PASSIONATE EYE presents The Life and Times of Nelson Mandela on Saturday, December 7 at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, a two hour special documentary.

Tonight on IDEAS at 9:05 p.m./9:30 p.m. NT on CBC Radio One, a rebroadcast of The Mandela Tapes. This program draws on 50 hours of recorded conversations with Mandela, held for many years in Johannesburg by archivists at the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory. IDEAS is the first radio program anywhere in the world to be given full access to these remarkable recordings.

Starting at 5 a.m. ET tomorrow morning, Friday December 6, on CBC News NetworkCBC NEWS NOW with Heather Hiscox will commemorate the life of Nelson Mandela. And on CBC Radio One, WORLD REPORT with David Common will have all of the latest developments.

Tomorrow morning on THE CURRENT with Laura Lynch, Canadians remember Nelson Mandela with stories of how he inspired their lives, their careers and how they even borrowed his name for their children.THE CURRENT airs at 8:30 a.m./9:00 a.m. (NT) on CBC Radio One.

On Day 6, airing Saturday at 10 a.m. / 10:30 a.m. NT on CBC Radio One, host Brent Bambury sits down with Christo Brand, Nelson Mandela’s former prison guard at Robben Island. Bambury will also be interviewing Tony Hollingsworth, the man who staged the 11 hour concert that made Mandela a house hold name.
