CBC Launches Three New Original Audio Programs on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen This Summer, Focused on Cultural Identity

Canada’s public broadcaster is introducing three original weekly radio shows centred around cultural identity and resilience as part of the upcoming CBC Radio One and CBC Listen summer schedule. Launching June 28 are UNFORKED (10×30) with host Samira Mohyeddin, revealing the culture and politics behind the food we eat, and RECOVERING FILIPINO (10×30), celebrating  life, family and Filipino culture through the eyes and escapades of host Jim Agapito.  Debuting June 29, THIS PLACE (10×30) with host Rosanna Deerchild is inspired by the graphic novel anthology of the same name and takes listeners on an audio journey through 150 years of Indigenous resistance and resilience. In addition, acclaimed CBC Podcasts TAI ASKS WHY and INAPPROPRIATE QUESTIONS will return to the CBC Radio One lineup, alongside RECALL: HOW TO START A REVOLUTION, A DEATH IN CRYPTOLAND and BRAINWASHED which will be available as part of THE CURRENT throughout the summer.

The full CBC Radio One summer schedule can be found here.

RECOVERING FILIPINO (10×30)
Mondays at 11:30 a.m. (3:30 NT) on CBC Radio One beginning June 28 and available to stream now on CBC Listen. Encore broadcasts on Saturdays at 6:30 p.m. (7:30 pm AT, 8 pm NT)

RECOVERING FILIPINO is an engaging and funny celebration of life, family, and Filipino culture through the eyes and escapades of host Jim Agapito. Growing up, Jim saw himself as the black sheep in his family. Years later, his grandma (or lola) called him a ‘bad Filipino.’ Now, Jim – a filmmaker, punk rock singer, and boxer – is on a recovery mission to learn more about his culture and what makes Filipinos everywhere tick. Jim’s quest takes him around the world (virtually) to talk to experts, his fellow pinoys, and the most avowed Filipino in his life: his mom, Yolanda.

UNFORKED (10×30)
Mondays at 9:30 a.m. on CBC Radio One and CBC Listen beginning June 28. Encore broadcasts on Saturdays at 11 a.m. (11:30 NT)

We all gotta eat. Sometimes food is just sustenance to get you through the day — but food can be so much more. UNFORKED picks apart the food we eat to reveal the culture and politics baked into it. On the surface, it’s a show about food…but really it’s about people — the people who grow, cook, eat and claim food as their own. Hosted by journalist and restaurateur Samira Mohyeddin, UNFORKED presents sticky conversations with passionate eaters where nothing is off the table. From the vilification of MSG and Indigenous chefs who are decolonizing their diets, to the battle to ‘own’ hummus and the ways we use food as a love language, UNFORKED will change the way you think about your next meal.

THIS PLACE (10×30)
Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. (8 NT) on CBC Radio One beginning June 29, with encore broadcasts on Fridays at 1:00 p.m. (1:30 NT). Available to stream on CBC Listen starting June 22

THIS PLACE is a  new original audio series from CBC Books revealing the Indigenous heroes, battles, triumphs and traditions which live outside and beyond the national story we have been taught. A mix of dramatization and interviews, hosted by Rosanna Deerchild, brings a new historical perspective of “this place” we call Canada to life. This unique series is a 10-part journey through one-hundred and fifty years of Indigenous resistance and resilience.

TAI ASKS WHY
Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. (8 NT) on CBC Radio One beginning June 30

Fourteen-year-old host Tai Poole has no time for small talk. He’d rather discuss the toughest questions out there. Tai boldly goes where no ninth grader has gone before, asking questions like: What’s happening in my teen brain? How is the Universe going to end? Why do humans dance? How much screen time is too much? His conversations with everyone from NASA experts, physicists and dancers, to his little brother Kien, will expand listeners’ minds, no matter how old they are!

INAPPROPRIATE QUESTIONS
Fridays at 1:30 p.m. (2 NT) on CBC Radio One beginning July 2 and available to stream now on CBC Listen

INAPPROPRIATE QUESTIONS is a podcast that explores and deconstructs invasive questions often asked to different communities. Whether it’s “What are you?” “Can you have sex?” or “Why don’t you drink?” the show explores what these questions imply, their social and historical contexts, and why people ask them. Each episode, hosts Elena “millennial” Hudgins Lyle and Harvinder “just a dad” Wadhwa speak with guests and experts who’ve been on the receiving end of these types of questions. The hosts each bring different perspectives to these topics, and tons of dad jokes along the way.
