David Common Named Host Of CBC’s Metro Morning

David Common is the new host of CBC Toronto’s number one morning show, Metro Morning. Common is an award-winning journalist known for getting to the heart of stories that spark meaningful conversation.

“I’ve spent much of my career on an adventure, travelling all over the world to where big news events were happening. But Toronto has long been home,” said Common. “It is exciting to go from a global adventure to a local one, with the opportunity to meet and hear from people in all corners of this diverse city.”

Common grew up in Toronto, first in an apartment in St. Jamestown with his mother, next in the St. Clair West neighbourhood. He now lives in Etobicoke with his wife, two daughters and his dog, Shadow.

He has reported from 85 countries, from war coverage in Iraq and Afghanistan to exclusive access aboard a Canadian warship’s symbolic journey across the Taiwan Strait. Most recently, Common hosted CBC’s award-winning investigative consumer program, Marketplace, but he has also been a longtime correspondent on The National and a guest host on multiple CBC News programs.

“David brings a natural curiosity, quick wit, and a wealth of journalistic chops to our flagship morning program,” said Prasanna Rajagopalan, Director of Journalism and Programming at CBC Toronto. “Those traits will serve him well as he explores the daily workings of life in the GTA.”

With Common at the helm, Metro Morning will ask hard questions of decision-makers, provide essential local news, and celebrate the people and ideas that make this city unique.

“Everyone on the Metro Morning team lives in the GTA. We face the same challenges as our listeners, whether staring down growing prices or tackling the Gardiner,” said Common. “We want to help people navigate the challenges of our daily lives, and we are here to hold those in power accountable.”

David’s first day in the host chair on Metro Morning is October 16, 2023.

Metro Morning can be heard weekdays from 5:30 – 8:30 a.m. on CBC Radio One 99.1 FM and on CBC Listen. CBC Radio One’s Metro Morning keeps listeners informed about what’s going on in Toronto and offers listeners an optimistic, sometimes humorous view of the world, together with the day’s more serious news.
