Canadians Choose CTV With Most-Watched 2011 Federal Election Night Coverage

Last night, Canadians elected CTV News their #1 choice for 2011 Federal Election results. A combined average of 2.16 million viewers tuned in to CTV’s election results special ELECTION 2011 on CTV and CTV News Channel from 9 p.m. – 1 a.m., 8% more viewers than CBC and CBC News Network (2 million), and 224% more than Global (668,000). CTV’s audience increased by 67% compared to its 2008 Federal Election special.

CTV’s audience peaked at nearly three million viewers at 10:09 p.m., just after polls closed in British Columbia. CTV’s ELECTION 2011 also drew more than 9.8 million unique viewers overall compared to 8.7 million on CBC.

In addition to winning the entire night, CTV was the most-watched network hour-to-hour as well in total viewers (see graph above).

In the Greater Toronto Area, more viewers tuned in to coverage on CP24 throughout the night than on Global or Citytv, with CP24 generating 1.1 million unique viewers compared to 1.06 million on Global and 731,000 on Citytv. On average, 78,000 viewers watched CP24’s YOUR VOTE 2011 from 8 p.m. – 1:30 a.m., nearly four times its average audience in that time period.

Helmed by Canada’s most-trusted news anchor, Lloyd Robertson, along with Lisa LaFlamme, CTV had journalists in every corner of the country, offering the most-trusted and comprehensive election results coverage in Canada.

“Canadians consistently choose CTV News as their destination for historic news events,” said Wendy Freeman, President, CTV News. “We served viewers with the commitment, professionalism and powerful journalism that Canadians expect from CTV.”

CTV News online delivered top-notch election coverage on Monday night as well, attracting almost one million unique visitors (971,145), eagerly following every turn of last night’s thrilling political battle on CTV.ca. Overall, traffic to CTV.ca yesterday generated 5.7 million page views, more than double average site traffic, and the second-most-viewed day in CTV.ca history. The live, online election results system generated 1.2 million requests from people looking for individual riding results as well as the national totals.

CTV’s Federal Election results special ELECTION 2011 drew on the experience, resources and strengths of CTV’s national and local news divisions across Canada. ELECTION 2011 was hosted by CTV National News’ Lloyd Robertson and Lisa LaFlamme. Brian Lebold is the Senior Director. Jonathan Kay is Coordinating Producer. Sophia Skopelitis is Remotes Producer. Lucie de Varennes is Production Manager. Dan Taylor is Broadcast Producer. Anton Koschany is Executive Producer. Wendy Freeman is President, CTV News.
