The Western Association of Broadcasters (WAB) has awarded CTV Edmonton its Gold Medal Award for outstanding contribution to Canadian broadcasting industry in the area of Community service.
The CTV RINK OF DREAMS pays homage to backyard ice rinks found across our country. Located behind the news studios of CTV Edmonton, it is a place where winter is celebrated through pick-up games of shinny and re-creations of NHL overtime shoot outs.
“The backyard rink is part of the story of who we are as Edmontonians. It’s where generations have come together for friendship, fun and memories,” said Glenn Kubish, Director of News and Public Affairs, CTV Edmonton. “The WAB Gold Medal is a fitting reflection of the inspiration we draw from serving our community.”
In February of 2010 CTV Edmonton partnered with ATB Financial to present a NHL style shoot-out to benefit eight local charities: The Greater Edmonton Foundation (Housing For Seniors), Kids Kottage Foundation, The Northern Alberta Brain Injury Society, The Military families Resource Centre, The Youth Emergency Shelter, YOUCAN, The Terra Centre for Pregnant and Parenting Teens, The Zebra Child Protection Centre and The Edmonton D.A.R.E. Program. Members of the community (including a few of CTV’s on-air staff) competed to score shoot-out goals against net minder Josh Classen (CTV Edmonton’s Chief Meteorologist); in total, more than $10,000 was raised.
“The dedication of our staff to building and maintaining this rink has been incredible. Being able to use this new home-grown facility to benefit so many organizations have been especially rewarding”, said Lloyd Lewis, CTV Edmonton Vice-President and General Manager. “I think I speak for everyone here when I say it’s a tremendous honour to be recognized in this way by our industry.”
