Global News Redefines Morning Television in Toronto With The Morning Show Featuring The Return of Liza Fromer

Global News is providing Torontonians with an exciting and engaging way to start their day with the launch of The Morning Show. Featuring an all-star lineup including the much-loved Liza Fromer, The Morning Show will offer a groundbreaking departure from the typical morning news formula. Fromer will be joined by Dave Gerry, Kris Reyes, and two cast members to be announced at a later date when they begin broadcasting live from Shaw Media’s highly accessible street-front studio currently under construction at 121 Bloor St E. The Morning Show will air weekdays from 6-9am ET, and is slated to launch early this fall.

The Morning Show is more than just a breakfast news program that retells the same stories every half hour. It will feature a team of smart and talented broadcast veterans from different backgrounds freely engaging in unscripted, interactive conversations about the day-to-day life that reflects the topics most relevant to Torontonians. Gone is the sterile newsroom feel, the scripted dialogue and the hard-news style of presenting the day’s events used frequently by other morning news programs. Replacing this is a warm, open-concept environment conducive to organic, free-flowing conversation among the entire team.

Overseen by legendary producer Bud Pierce, The Morning Show will also challenge traditional morning show conventions by actively incorporating social media tools into all aspects of the cast, giving viewers the opportunity to participate in conversations as they occur on set. In this regard, The Morning Show will be much more active and engaging than any other morning show in the Toronto market.

“With The Morning Show, Global Toronto is delivering a product that will completely re-energize morning news in this market,” said Ward Smith, Global Toronto News Director and Station Manager. “Our on-air team is fantastic, and we believe the chemistry that exists within this team combined with our groundbreaking new format will give viewers a completely unique viewing experience.”

The Morning Show team is as follows:

Liza Fromer: Host – Fromer brings her wit and charm back to morning television after leaving Breakfast Television for a five-year hiatus. Fromer’s light-hearted, yet straightforward approach makes her the perfect fit with The Morning Show’s unprecedented conversational style.

Dave Gerry: Co-Host – As a former reporter, host and co-host, Gerry is an award-winning Canadian television and radio journalist with many years of broadcast experience. Gerry’s quick-witted personality and veteran broadcast stature provides The Morning Show with a co-host perfectly in tune with the show’s unique conversational style.

Kris Reyes: News Anchor – Reyes brings a passion for news and a wealth of experience to Global. A self-described news junkie and consumer of social media outlets, Reyes’ experience will help her accurately deliver the news, then engage in conversation with The Morning Show’s team and viewers alike.

The announcement of Global Toronto’s new morning show is the latest in a series of plans to revitalize and reinvigorate morning show programming in several markets across the Global network. The launch of these new morning shows represents Global News’ ongoing dedication to providing viewers with the most interesting, insightful and informative news programming possible, around the clock. New morning shows will appear in the following markets:

Global Maritimes 6-8:30am AT – Weekdays (launching late-November)
Global Winnipeg 6-9:00am CT – Weekdays (launching mid-September)
Global Regina 6:30-8:30am CT – Weekdays (launching late-August)
Global Saskatoon 6:30-8:30am CT – Weekdays (launching mid-September)
In addition, Global Edmonton and Global Calgary will both be expanding their current morning shows to seven days-a-week with the inclusion of Sundays, running from 7-10am MT beginning this September in both markets.

“With the launch of these new morning shows, Global News is capitalizing on an opportunity to strengthen our relevance and immediacy to local TV viewers.” said Troy Reeb, Vice President, News for Shaw Media. “As we expand our footprint nationally over the coming months, Canadians will be given the opportunity to experience an even greater selection of Global News content created by our award-winning team of reporters and producers.”

Global News is also preparing to launch an all-new and original Sunday morning current affairs and political program, The West Block (working title). Slated to begin this September live from Ottawa, this new program will feature an expert panel of political experts discussing the issues making headlines from our nation’s capital. Additional information regarding Global News’ new program will be made available in the coming months.
