From start to finish, Global’s robust slate of primetime hits delivered another stellar season for the channel. The lineup resulted in more Global programming landing in the Top 20 nationally, making Global the only network to increase its presence in the Top 20 rankings this season.
“Last year we set out focused on increasing Global’s viewership in the 10pm timeslot and we succeeded with two new dramas, Chicago Fire and Elementary,” commented Barb Williams, SVP, Content, Shaw Media. “Global had a powerful season and this is exactly where we want to be as we gear up for the new television year.”
Global’s overall primetime schedule experienced significant growth for multiple time periods across multiple nights and increased its daytime viewership each weekday between 9am – 12pm by 75% over last year.

In line with this success, Global News has also continued to strengthen its position as Canada’s fastest-growing news organization. This year saw additional investments in Global News communities with the launch of two Morning News programs in Montreal and Halifax respectively, giving the network more locally-produced morning news programming than any other Canadian broadcaster. Adding to this success was the launch of the national version of The Morning Show, the only nationally-broadcast conventional breakfast program in the country.
This investment continued in March with the launch of Global News: BC 1, the province’s only all-news channel, as well as the complete reinvention ofGlobalnews.ca, centred around industry-leading design and a new editorial strategy providing even more ground-breaking news content.
“This past season has been a period of unprecedented growth for Global News, and has seen our organization add over 40 new hours of original news programming across the network,” says Troy Reeb, Senior Vice President, Global News and Station Operations, Shaw Media. “The launch of three new morning shows, a regionally-focused news channel in B.C. and the complete reinvention of Globalnews.ca has positioned Global News for additional success well into 2013 and beyond.”
In addition to its new program launches, Global News Hour has continued to maintain a leadership position this season as the #1 news source in the key Western metered markets, dominating the closest broadcast competitor in Calgary by 38%, Edmonton by 123% and Vancouver by a staggering218%**.
