Canadians are among the largest consumers of coffee in the world. Millions of people nationally start their morning with their favourite roast, many of them are blissfully unaware of the current global coffee crisis and of the thousands of Ethiopian agricultural workers toil each day in “sweatshops in the field.” Bitter Coffee reveals the silent story of this ecological disaster through the experiences of two Ethiopian families – one living in Ethiopia, the other in Canada. For one family, a world of poverty, as they face starvation, their coffee crops virtually worthless; for the other, a world of prosperity, finding success as Ethiopian Canadian coffee importers, living in Canada.
“Bitter Coffee is the first documentary to be aired in the Amharic language on OMNI Television.” commented Madeline Ziniak, National Vice President, OMNI Television. “Not only does this documentary draw attention to a very important ecological issue, it also brings Canada’s Ethiopian community to the forefront.”
The documentary also includes interviews with Canadian coffee roasters and buyers and incorporates the efforts of an international scientist who is trying to save one of the last remaining coffee forests, in southwestern Ethiopia. Through the course of the documentary, viewers will receive an in-depth look into the lives of the people affected most by this unseen crisis.
