Professor Brian Cox’s New BBC Earth Science Landmark Series, Universe, Transports Audiences to Newly-Discovered Places in the Cosmos We Didn’t Know Existed 10 Years Ago

This fall, Canadian audiences will have a front row seat to the greatest show in the Universe. Beginning November 21, world-renowned British physicist, Professor Brian Cox takes viewers back in time, far beyond our solar system and out into the vastness of space, in the stunning new BBC Earth series Universe (5×60’). Across the five-part series, Professor Brian Cox explores the dramatic story of the origin of the Universe from its formation 13.8 billion years ago to a glimpse into its future trillions of years from now. From watching the birth of a star in a stellar nursery, witnessing mayhem caused by colliding galaxies and experiencing the astounding power of supermassive black holes as it consumes an entire planet. As a result of huge advances in our understanding of the Universe, BBC Earth’s Universe is able to take audiences to places in the cosmos we didn’t even know existed just ten years ago and tell their story. The all-new series showcases the expansive story of the cosmos, uncovering exquisite moments of sheer drama that changed the Universe forever and to what could be its ultimate fate. The Canadian broadcast premiere of Universe airs Sunday, November 21 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on BBC Earth.

Using state-of-the-art animation, stunning CGI imagery, the latest scientific research and archival footage captured during scientific missions, Universe reveals awe-inspiring wonders in its history that defined Earth’s – and our own – destiny. The title track for Universe, ‘Neptune,’ is an exclusive recording and unique new version of the seminal single from multi-award-winning and major festival headlining band, Foals, in collaboration with Hans Zimmer’s critically acclaimed film and TV music scoring company Bleeding Fingers.

The first two episodes of Universe include:

  • Episode 1 – The Sun: Godstar
    November 21
    at 10 p.m. ET/PT
The sun is a constant presence in our lives and has been a lifegiving source of light, heat and energy for 4.6 billion years. Yet we’ve only recently begun to unravel its epic history and discover its place among an even grander cycle of birth, death and renewal that makes this the age of stars. To piece together this stellar saga, Professor Brian Cox explores new clues from the iconic Hubble Space Telescope and a new heat-resistant solar probe that’s designed to fly as close to the Sun’s million-degree atmosphere as possible.

Episode 2 – Alien Worlds: The Search For Second Earth
    November 28
    at 10 p.m. ET/PT
For nearly as long as humans have gazed up at the night sky, we’ve wondered whether other lifeforms and intelligences could be thriving on worlds far beyond our own. Answering that question seemed forever fated to remain pure speculation. But over the last few decades, ultra-sensitive telescopes and dogged detective work have transformed alien planet-hunting from science fiction into hard fact. Professor Brian Cox tells the story of how the first breakthrough discoveries of exoplanets—planets orbiting other stars—were made.

Universe is a BBC Studios Science Unit production with NOVA and WGBH Boston for BBC and PBS, co-produced by Xigua Video and ByteDance in partnership with the Open University. Ashley Gething (The Sun & The Big Bang), Suzy Boyles (Alien Worlds), Kenny Scott (The Milky Way) and Tom Hewitson (Black Holes) serve as Producer and Director on their respective episodes. Andrew Cohen and Gideon Bradshaw serve as Executive Producers. Julia Cort and Chris Schmidt serve as Executive Producers for NOVA. BBC Studios is distributing the series internationally.
