Turning Trash Heaps Into Treasure Hunts, JUNKies Premieres Nov. 6 on Discovery Science

An eclectic band of dumpster divers are redefining engineering in the new Discovery Science series, JUNKies. From the producers of ODDITIES, this six-part series premiering Sunday, November 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT, appeals to a new breed of collectors/creators dubbed “enginerds.” Go inside the subculture of high-end inventors, backyard builders and antique pickers constantly looking for the missing parts to complete their passion projects.

Jimmy’s Junk is the setting for JUNKies, where Jimmy “The Junk Genius” Ruocco goes to any lengths to construct new and inspired devices – including a hovercraft, a coffin car, a lawn mower racer and a flamethrower – all made from the finest discarded spare parts. These guys know the guts, bolts and science inside even the most unique machines. Crossing paths with a crazy cast of characters, they encounter everyone from inventors and students to mechanics and artists.

Highlights from JUNKies include:

JUNKies – “Rocket Ride”
Sun., Nov. 6 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
At Jimmy’s Junk, inventors are looking for parts to complete what appears to be a jet-propelled merry-go-round. Later, shop regular Hale Storm tries to sell Ruocco an African Birthing Chair and a gigantic piece that could take the yard to new heights.

JUNKies – “Surf Cycle”
Sun., Nov. 13 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
An inventor needs Ruocco to hunt down a replacement engine for his surf cycle prototype. Then, two students are hoping he can give their solar powered tank the firepower it needs to win a creators competition for a prize of $10,000.

JUNKies – “Fire Ballers”
Sun., Nov. 20 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
Things heat up at the junkyard when inventors need help creating a flame cannon and Storm reveals his own balls of fire. Later when a team of lawn mower racers need a replacement transmission it’s up to miracle mechanic Billy Cottle to turn a piece of trash into a trophy winner.

Also this season on JUNKies two inventors need help turning a fridge into a beer launcher, and Hale lands himself in hot water on “Hot Air Hale” (Nov. 27). Next, it’s all hands on deck to create a huge new sign for the yard, but when things are just about finished a member of the team really drops the ball on “Surf Cycle” (Dec. 4). Finally, on “Junkin’ Chunkin’” (Dec. 11) a team of Punkin Chunkers need Ruocco’s help to take their homemade trebuchet to the next level, and Storm has found something that he thinks will blow Ruocco away.
