Void of Coca-Cola signs, McDonald’s or mobile phones, 40 teens enter into a world they never imagined and experience climate change first-hand. For the world’s first Youth Summit on Climate Change in Antarctica, these climate conscious students attend the coolest school on the planet – E-Base. In the one-hour special COOL SCHOOL ANTARCTICA, premiering Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. ET/12 midnight PT on Discovery World HD, the students’ adventure is designed to create leaders in promoting, inspiring and educating their generation to make changes and commit to a more sustainable way of living.
In order to get to E-Base, the first school to run fully on renewable energy, the students must spend three days crossing the roughest seas in the world – the Drake Passage. Fortunately, polar explorer and environmentalist Professor Robert Swan is there to help them through their travels. Once back on land the students begin their journey, camping on the ice, riding Zodiacs, and experiencing close encounters with Orca and Humpback whales.
Among the adventurous teens include AUSTRALIAN IDOL 2009, Hayley Warner, indigenous AFL player Malcolm Lynch and indigenous Australian track star Narelle Long. The latter pair makes history as the first indigenous Australians to set foot in Antarctica in the United Nations Year of the Youth.
