PT on Discovery, LOWCOUNTRY RAIDERSjoins the ambitious divers who put themselves in great danger to pull these million-year-old prehistoric shark teeth out of muddy riverbeds. Are they mavericks, or fools? Viewers can weigh in on Twitter with @DiscoveryCanada, hashtag #LCRaiders.
Lowcountry dive legend Dave Topper and firefighter Rick Reely are rivals with a bitter history. When Reely started diving for teeth, the Toppers family of divers welcomed him aboard hoping that, as a firefighter, he could provide free air for their scuba tanks. However, it didn’t take long for the Toppers to notice that every time they took their unpredictable and aggressive new partner to a promising site, Reely would be back the next day with another crew cleaning it out. Now, Reely has put together his own team of divers, and they are on the prowl to find the best sites with the biggest pay-outs, racing ahead of the Toppers.
But this is no kiddie pool. These rivers are treacherous, with near-zero visibility in the muddy black water, and strong currents that can carry a diver right out to sea. Things can go wrong so quickly that divers can be forced to abandon expensive scuba gear just to escape with their lives. But for most of these treasure hunters, the danger just intensifies the thrill of the hunt and makes the prize that much sweeter.
In this one-hour special, it’s just another day at the office for the Toppers as they find themselves at another prime location on the Morgan River. With just a few dives, Chris Topper comes up with a handful of Meg teeth, worth a fist full of dollars. But the Lowcountry is not all about Megalodon teeth. Reely and his team gamble on a dive at Batter Creek, in search of a an ice age sink-hole hiding prehistoric elephant bones. One of Reely’s team members risks his life to find these giant Mastodon bones, which they believe they can piece together and sell to the highest bidder. The Toppers catch wind of their foe’s “big find” and they need to see it to believe it.
