The Investigators with Diana Swain *SEASON PREMIERE *NEW NIGHT
Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 7 p.m. (7:30 NT) on CBC and online at CBC TV streaming app and cbc.ca/watch
The Investigators with Diana Swain is back for its third season at a time when trust in the news media is under intense scrutiny. The show reveals and demystifies the work of journalists by exposing the challenges behind the headlines, and ultimately pushing for greater transparency. Among the topics on the season premiere is how the news business covers the soon-to-be-legal cannabis industry. Media outlets across the country are hiring cannabis reporters to do just that. But where is the line between advocacy and journalism? Does pot really need its own beat? Also on the show, we explore how CBC’s Marketplace managed to track down scammers in India who are targeting Canadians with phoney CRA phone calls.

14 & Muslim *SEASON PREMIERE *NEW NIGHT

Friday, September 21, 2018 at 9 p.m. (9:30 NT) on CBC and online at the CBC TV streaming app and cbc.ca/watch from 12noon the same day.

In the short time since Donald Trump has been President, anti-Muslim rhetoric has grown exponentially. And in Canada, we are far from immune — we’ve witnessed the devastating massacre in Quebec City, anti-Muslim rallies in downtown Toronto and the targeting of Mosques and Muslim community centres in the GTA and beyond. 14 & Muslim follows Sahar, Malaieka and Ahmad as they transition from a private, Islamic elementary school to high school, capturing what it means to be young, Muslim and growing up in the West at this unsettling time in modern history. Shot over six months, we follow them as they navigate new worlds and go from being children to young adults. Will they and their family choose the familiar — though some might say insular — confines of Islamic High School? Or will they opt for a public or even Catholic high school and enter a new, less familiar world?

Marketplace tracks the scammers behind one of the biggest cyber-crime schemes in Canadian history —  those fake CRA phone calls. Tens of thousands of Canadians scammed out of of millions of dollars. So, who’s really behind the scheme? David Common travels to India to catch the fraudsters. Marketplace tracks down two illegal call centres and is told the RCMP could be doing more to bust the scammers. This is the closest any journalist has ever come to finding these criminal gangs.

In just one devastating month, Houston, Florida, and the Caribbean were changed forever. Three monster hurricanes swept in from the Atlantic during the summer of 2017, one after another, shattering storm records and killing hundreds of people. First, Hurricane Harvey brought catastrophic rain and flooding to Houston, causing $125 billion in damage. Less than two weeks later, Hurricane Irma lashed the Caribbean with 180 mile per hour winds and decimated the island of Barbuda. Hot on Irma’s heels, Hurricane Maria intensified from a tropical depression to a Category 5 hurricane in just 54 hours, then ravaged Puerto Rico and left millions of people without power.
Is the historic devastation caused during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season the new normal? If so, how prepared are we to deal with similar storms in the future?
