Prestigious Super Channel Feature Documentary Award Launches for Third Year

Building on the successes of the Super Channel Feature Documentary Award, Super Channel, Canada’s only national English pay-television network, is offering its third annual opportunity for two documentary director/ producer teams with credits in hour-long television, to make the leap to feature length documentaries.

Marguerite Pigott, Super Channel Head of Creative Development said, “Industry support for this award has been outstanding, and we’re inspired by the success of previous winners.  World class Canadian documentaries are a vital part of our programming, so Super Channel is proud to play a role supporting Canadian talent in this genre.”

The two winning projects will each receive 15-20 hours of mentorship from a senior feature documentary producer and $3,000 to be used to attend the Hot Docs Forum 2012 (HDF) and to further develop the project.

“The Super Channel Feature Documentary Award is a remarkable opportunity for feature documentary filmmakers to access creative support and market opportunities. The Hot Docs Forum is honored to be a part of this dynamic award.” Elizabeth Radshaw, Hot Docs Forum and Market Director.

Last year’s winners agree.

Super Channel’s award gave us the credibility boost we needed to access broadcasters at the Hot Docs Forum. Paul Saltzman, our mentor, guided us in creative development and the whole process was worth significantly more than the sum of its parts. The Award changed the course of our documentary.

Melanie Wood and Greg Masuda, Producers/Directors, Goddess of Mercy

The Super Channel award launched a new chapter of my film’s development. Michael McMahon was an incredible mentor who helped me navigate a complex new marketplace at Hot Docs, while the meetings the award facilitated have contributed to and affirmed the creative process of the story.

Michelle Mason, Producer/Director, A Song for Carlos

Winners will be announced mid December, and after that point they will work with mentors to prepare projects for pitching in time for the HDF in May 2012. Winners will attend the HDF as observers, and use this opportunity to meet with potential broadcasters, executive producers or other potential partners.

Submissions open on October 19 and the deadline for Submissions is November 23, 5 p.m. MST. More information about the award, eligibility, and submission requirements is available at www.superchannel.ca/creativeaward.
