Sportsnet today announced the broadcast details surrounding the new original documentary series On the Edge: The Road to the MasterCard Memorial Cup. Commissioned by Sportsnet and produced by Fadoo Productions, the eight-partseries provides a rare behind-the-scenes look at the intense world of Canadian junior hockey, following the Western Hockey League’s Saskatoon Blades on their journey to the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup. The first one-hour episodepremieres Friday, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. MT on Sportsnet West with encore broadcasts at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT on Sportsnet East, Ontario and Pacific, and on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 9 p.m. CT on Citytv Saskatchewan.
As host team for the 2013 MasterCard Memorial Cup, the Saskatoon Blades already have a guaranteed spot in this season’s tournament, which will also include the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League. On the Edge: The Road to the MasterCard Memorial Cup gets up-close-and-personal with the management, coaches and players of the Blades’ organization on their season-long journey to the greatest championship in junior hockey.
Main characters in the documentary include head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken, owner Jack Brodsky, first round 2011 NHL draft pick Duncan Siemens, second round 2012 NHL draft picks Lukas Sutter and Dalton Thrower, and overage captain Brendan Walker.
In the series premiere, viewers are introduced to the management and players of the 2012-13 Saskatoon Blades. A team built around veterans, it is a group of three 20-year-old players that feel the most pressure to perform in a year that guarantees a Memorial Cup appearance. After a bad start to the season that includes a blowout loss at home, coach Molleken is forced to make a bold move to shake up the team.
