In STONE THROWER: THE CHUCK EALEY STORY, director Charles Officer, tells the revealing and emotional story of how gifted Ohio-born quarterback, Chuck Ealey found refuge in Canada and the CFL in the face of racial intolerance in the United States. Ealey, who went 35-0 at the quarterback position throughout his time at the University of Toledo, signed with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 1972 and led his team to a Grey Cup victory in his rookie season. With his championship win, Ealey became the first African-American quarterback to win the Grey Cup.STONE THROWER: THE CHUCK EALEY STORY is the second of eight documentaries to debut on TSN as part of the network’s ENGRAVED ON A NATION series. The documentary airs immediately following the CFL ON TSN game with B.C. @ Hamilton beginning at 7 p.m. ET.
STONE THROWER: THE CHUCK EALEY STORY features original music by homegrown Bedouin Soundclash vocalist and guitarist Jay Malinowski. Along with working on vocals with co-composer Bruce Fowler, Malinowski contributed three tracks – “Pacific Gyre”, “Surface”, and “Immense Love” – to the documentary from his solo project Dead Coast, as well as an unreleased track, “Ocean City”, by Bedouin Soundclash. The documentary also includes tracks by local Toronto artists Kamau and Kae Sun. Dave Guenette served as Music Supervisor for the documentary.
Named “10 To Watch” by Playback magazine in 2009, Officer is a talented young director whose debut feature film, Nurse.Fighter.Boy, garnered 10 Genie nominations, winning achievement in direction and original sreenplay. His first feature documentary, Mighty Jerome: The Greatest Comeback in Track and Field History, won four Leo Awards in 2011 and was recently honoured with a 2012 Northwest Regional Emmy Award for Best Historical Documentary.
Commissioned by Bell Media, ENGRAVED ON A NATION airs on TSN and in French on RDS in October and November, with encore presentations on CTV and CTV Two (click here for broadcast schedule).
