GAME DAY NOTES:
Norway vs. Thailand
Norway is led by Trine Ronning and Solveig Gulbrandsen, a duo that’s combined for 74 national goals. Isabell Herlovsen is the x-factor for Norway, as she can stretch the field and take off some of the pressure from the team’s younger players with her offense. Norway’s coach Even Pellerud coached Canada’s national women’s team from 1999-2008.
Thailand hopes to make its mark when it makes its first WORLD CUP appearance. Thailand is a quick paced team that’s led by 25-year-old Nisa Romyen, who has 32 national goals. Kanjana Sungngeon is another player that will put pressure on opponents offensively.
Germany vs. Ivory Coast
Germany, ranked #1 in the world, has appeared in every WOMEN’S WORLD CUP. The German team has several players who can lead the way offensively and is known for great defense. Whether it’s Celia Sasic, Anja Mittag, or Alexandra Popp, Germany boasts great depth offensively. Five different players have 100-plus caps and 10 other players are 23 years old or younger.
Ivory Coast looks to make an impact in its first WORLD CUP appearance. Veteran keeper Dominique Thiamale will set the tone for this team and hopes to carry momentum from the African Women’s Championship. Offensively, youngsters Ines Nrehy and Jose Nahi have to be aggressive and capitalize on their chances.
