Before we get started on the official week, there are a couple of late editions for Saturday, July 8th (and Saturdays ahead, as well):
The Millers – 8-9pm on CBS and CTV
The McCarthys – 9-10pm on CBS
CBS has scheduled the remaining episodes of these cancelled Thursday night comedies to air in the TV graveyard on Saturdays until they have all aired (in the case of The McCarthys, that means only two weeks and four episodes).
Orphan Black – 9pm on CTV – 3rd Season Premiere
For those who don’t get Space but want to see what the fuss is all about, this outstanding sci-fi drama begins its run on CTV. The first episode already aired earlier this year on CTV in an effort to lure viewers to subscribe to Space.
Sunday
Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell – 8-10pm (two episodes) on TMN – Series Premiere
This historical drama series set in 19th-century England when practical magic had fallen out of favour with the masses. It tells the story of two men, magician Gilbert Norrell and his apprentice Jonathan Strange. They eventually square off in a competition to become England’s greatest magician. It’s an adaptation of the international best-selling novel by Susanna Clarke and stars Bertie Carvel and Eddie Marsan (Ray Donavan).
Monday
Maron – 10pm on TMN – Series Premiere
Marc Maron is a comedian’s comedian and is well known among people who love stand-up comedy. He has recently gained wider notoriety since U.S. President Barack Obama appeared on this podcast, “WTF with Marc Maron” and used the word that has more commonly known as “The ‘N’ word”. In this series, Maron stars as a fictional version of himself (in the tradition of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm), a man who hobnobs with comedy giants but has a hard time maintaining healthy relationships of any kind. Judd Hirsch co-stars as his father, Nora Zehetner as his girlfriend and Andy Kindler as his best friend.
Funny as Hell – 10:30 on TMN – Series Premiere
Performances by comics and musicians from the Just for Laughs Festival.
Penn and Teller: Fool Us – 8pm on The WB – 2nd Season Premiere
Another season of aspiring magicians who perform for Penn and Teller and their fans.
Tuesday
Hollywood Game Night – 10:01pm on NBC and CTV – 3rd Season Premiere
Jane Lynch is back for another summer of celebrities losing their cool and acting the fool…all in the name of fun! I wonder if Jane can remain as host beyond this season, since she stars in a new CBS sitcom this fall (Angel From Hell, which I will be reviewing next week, as another summer of Fall TV Reviews begins!
Justified – 9pm on IFC Canada – 5th Season Premiere
For those who haven’t seen the penultimate season of this outstanding series, if you get IFC, here’s you chance.
Wednesday
Star Wars: Droid Tales – 6pm on Family
This looks like fun! R2D2 and CPO headline this series about the adventures of their Lego counterparts as they recount the entire Star Wars saga.
The Amazing Race Canada – 9pm on CTV – 3rd Season Premiere
The 12 competing teams kick off their journey in Quebec City.
Why? With Hannibal Buress – 10:30pm on Comedy – Series Premiere
The comedian who became famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view) for drawing attention to the allegations against beloved comedy icon Bill Cosby has parlayed his notoriety into his own show. Each week, he provides his perspective on a range of topics.
Rizzoli and Isles – 9pm on Superchannel – 6th Season Premiere
The 18-episode sixth season kicks off with Rizzoli’s brother, Frankie, accused of shooting an unarmed man.
Major Crimes – 10pm on Superchannel – 4th Season Premiere
Season four begins with Captain Raydor making a fateful choice in the life of her adopted son.
Thursday
Key and Peele – 10:30pm on Comedy – 5th Season Premiere
This comedy sketch show takes advantage of its most popular character with President Obama and his “interpreter” Luther (Keegan Michael Key) meeting Hillary Clinton.
Dates – 9pm on The WB – Series Premiere
From the makers of the British teen drama, “Skins”, this drama anthology explores first dates between people who meet through an online dating service.
