TV Gord’s WHAT’S ON for the week of September 23rd to 29th, 2018

The network fall season gets underway with several returning shows, including some American shows that we get to see earlier in Canada (including Grey’s Anatomy, a day earlier). It also sees the revivals of Murphy Brown and Last Man Standing. For the first time, all of the Chicago shows (Med, Fire, and P.D.) are all on one night on NBC (although on Global, they are scattered around a bit, including earlier for Chicago P.D.). Happy viewing!

All times eastern; PBS time slots may vary on your station.

Magnum, P.I. – 9 to 10pm on CBS/CTV – Series Premiere

CBS continues to reboot classic TV series, and this latest one is destined to have several crossovers with Hawaii Five-0 (which trivia buffs might be interested to know have a long-time connection: when Hawaii Five-O was originally cancelled in 1980, CBS had Hawaiian studios to put to use, and thus Magnum P.I. was born). The biggest change in the new series is that the character of Higgins—a man in the original—is now a woman.

Halloween Baking Championship – 9 to 10pm on The Food Network – 4th Season Premiere

The Stone family is returning from a Jamaican vacation, but they have to be separated onto two flights. The first flight lands without incident. The second one, though, lands five-and-a-half years later, and for the people on the plane, it’s as though no time has passed. This drama will unravel the mystery of what happened to all of the passengers on that second plane.

Tuesday

The Gifted – 8 to 9pm on Fox/City – 2nd Season Premiere

After putting in her time on Rookie Blue, Missy Peregrym takes a new character to a new series. In the opener, Maggie Bell deals with difficult decisions she made when a bomb obliterates an apartment building.

This Is Us – 9 to 10:01pm on NBC/CTV – 3rd Season Premiere

Mr Inbetween – 11:20pm to 12:30am (two episodes) on FX – Series Premiere

This Australian black comedy-drama was written by and stars Scott Ryan as a hitman who tries to balance his vocation with other aspects of his life. Based on a 2005 mockumentary feature film called The Magicians, which was also written by, directed by, and starred Ryan.

Chicago P.D. – 7 to 8pm on Global/10 to 11pm on NBC – 6th Season Premiere

The Cool Kids – 8:30 to 9pm on City/Friday at 8:30 on Fox – Series Premiere

Remember high school? The cool kids? Well, if this sitcom is to be believed, that concept of class hierarchy never goes away, because here we are some 60 years later, and that structure is alive and well in a retirement community, where three friends (Martin Mull, David Alan Grier and Leslie Jordan) are surprised when the new “guy” is actually a rebellious woman (Vicki Lawrence). And then, the fun begins…

Modern Family – 9 to 9:31pm on ABC/City – 10th Season Premiere

Chicago Fire – 9 to 10pm on NBC/Thursday at 10pm on Global

Star – 9 to 10pm on Fox – 3rd Season Premiere

Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Brad Garrett (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Kimrie Lewis (Scandal) also star.

A Million Little Things – 10 to 11pm on ABC/City – Series Premiere

Friendship, it is said, isn’t a big thing; it’s a million little things. That’s the premise behind this drama series that is said to be in the tone of the film, The Big Chill, but is likelier ABC’s attempt at giving us another This Is Us. This ensemble of friends decide to live their lives to the fullest after one of them dies suddenly.
