TV GORD’S WHAT’S ON FOR THE WEEK OF April 3-9, 2016

Three–count ’em THREE–awards shows this week! Call The Midwife and The Odd Couple are back. Morgan Freeman takes a break from playing God to explore Him. The quest for The Underground Railroad is dramatized and PBS tries to launch a civil panel discussion show (they probably aren’t trying to book Donald Trump). Happy viewing!

Sunday

Jann Arden and Amazing Race host Jon Alexander co-host the night that honours Canadian music, with performance by Alessia Cara, Bryan Adams, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Coleman Hell, Dean Brody, Dear Rouge, LIGHTS, Scott Helman, Shawn Hook, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd, Whitehorse, and a special tribute to 2016 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee, Burton Cummings.

51st Academy of Country Music Awards – 8 to 11pm on CBS/Global

Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley host the ceremony from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Performers include Cam, Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Florida Georgia Line, Kelsea Ballerini, Eric Church and Sam Hunt.

This Lisa Kudrow-produced genealogy series returns with a profile of Aisha Tyler’s family history.

The Story of God with Morgan Freeman – 9pm on National Geographic Canada – Series Premiere

The Academy Award winning actor explores the meaning of life, God, and the evolution of religion. Each show covers a different aspect, the first one starting with, “Beyond Death”.

Tuesday

Ha!ifax Comedy Festival – 9pm on CBC – 20th Season Premiere

Point Taken – 11pm on PBS – Series Premiere

This round-table discussion series aims to have civil discourse without raised voices and bitter acrimony. In this political season in the U.S., this series is sorely needed. Hosted by journalist Carlos Watson, the guests will be wide-ranging, from academics to comedians.

Wednesday

Underground – 10pm to 11:15 on Bravo – Anthology Series Premiere

Christopher Meloni, Aldis Hodge, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Mykelti Williamson and Marc Blucas are among the cast of this historical drama as 1850s plantation slaves band together to escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad. John Legend produces this 10-episode first season.

Thursday

The Odd Couple – 8:30 on CBS/CTV – 2nd Season Premiere

Saturday

iHeartRadio Music Awards – 8 to 11pm on CTV

Justin Bieber and Meagan Trainor are among the performers at this awards show celebrating the year’s most popular music at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
