CBC/Radio-Canada’s Coverage of the RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES Reaches more than 86 percent of Canadiens

Just past the halfway point of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, approximately 30.4 million Canadians (86.3 per cent of the population) have watched CBC/Radio-Canada’s coverage across all networks and platforms during the first 10 days. The most-watched day of the Olympic Games to date was Sunday, Aug. 14, with 20.4 million Canadians tuning in across all television and digital platforms.

Nearly 7 million Canadians watched CBC’s coverage of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games on Sun. Aug. 14 as Jamaica’s Usain Bolt captured the gold medal and Canada’s Andre De Grasse won bronze in the men’s 100m. The audience for CBC’s English-language broadcast and digital simulcast peaked at 6.922 million during the race at 9:27 p.m. ET, making it the most-watched moment of Rio 2016 to date – up 122 percent over the peak moment during the Rio 2016 Opening Ceremony on Fri. Aug. 5.

In addition to impressive television audiences, CBC’s digital platforms have seen significant traffic from Aug. 5–14, with nearly 116 million page views and more than 19 million video views, representing 400 million minutes of live and on-demand video watched.

The most-watched moments from each of the first 10 days of Rio 2016 are as follows:

  • Day 0 (Aug. 5): 3.1 million viewers – Team Canada enters the stadium during the Opening Ceremony
  • Day 1 (Aug. 6): 2.7 million viewers – Canada wins bronze in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay
  • Day 2 (Aug. 7): 3.4 million viewers – Penny Oleksiak wins the silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly
  • Day 3 (Aug. 8): 3.4 million viewers – Women’s 100m breaststroke final
  • Day 4 (Aug. 9): 3.7 million viewers – Michael Phelps wins gold in the men’s 200m butterfly
  • Day 5 (Aug. 10): 3.6 million viewers – Santo Condorelli swims in the 100m freestyle final
  • Day 6 (Aug. 11): 4.3 million viewers – Penny Oleksiak wins gold in the women’s 200m freestyle
  • Day 7 (Aug. 12): 3.8 million viewers – Women’s 800m freestyle final
  • Day 8 (Aug. 13): 4.8 million viewers – Canada competes in the women’s 4x100m medley relay
  • Day 9 (Aug. 14): 6.9 million viewers – Andre De Grasse wins bronze in the men’s 100m
