In The Great Salt Shakedown,MARKETPLACE turns two sports teams and a high school class into guinea pigs, and reveals the surprising results from supposedly health-conscious Canadians.
About 14,000 deaths per year are caused by too much sodium, and they are completely preventable. Fat, protein, carbohydrates and calories register with most of us when thinking about our diets, but salt is barely on our radars. Only 6 per cent of our sodium intake comes from the salt shaker, and the rest is hidden in our food. We have to know where to find it in the first place, and the government seems willing to let the food industry off the hook.
