Hot Docs at Home on CBC: MEAT THE FUTURE

CBC and CBC Gem at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) and documentary Channel at 9 p.m. ET/PT

(Canada, documentary Channel Original, directed by Liz Marshall)

The prospect of meat consumption doubling by 2050 is a wake-up call for solutions. The planet’s future may lie with cell-based meat, a food science that grows meat from animal cells, without the need to slaughter animals.

Following the postponement of the 2020 Hot Docs Festival due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a selection of exclusive first-run feature documentaries that would have debuted at the Festival will now premiere on CBC, the free CBC Gem streaming service and documentary Channel each Thursday starting April 16.

GOOD PEOPLE

All five episodes of the documentary series available on the free CBC Gem streaming service

GOOD PEOPLE (Factual, 5×20, VICE Studios, Canada) is a journey across Canada to discover the root causes of social issues. Now more than ever, governments across Canada are grappling with how to make the right decisions at the right time, but we don’t have to solve these problems alone. GOOD PEOPLE takes a hard look at specific problems, and cities that have found ways to make a difference and offer hope. Exploring homelessness, gun violence outbreaks, veteran welfare, a world-worst record on garbage, and the opioid crisis, host Mark Sakamoto focuses on the issues and connects with the people most affected. He’s not claiming he’ll solve everything, but he’s hitting the road to connect and hear stories firsthand. GOOD PEOPLE is a sobering, unabashedly human, ultimately uplifting documentary series about acknowledging our failings – and striving to do better. If we’re not doing it right, then who is?

Episode 101: Between the Cracks

Synopsis: Mark investigates the homelessness crisis in Hamilton, Ontario before looking to Medicine Hat, Alberta for innovative solutions.
