W5 Investigates the Story of a Convicted Manitoba Murderer’s 40-Year Fight to Clear His Name, Saturday, Jan. 26 on CTV

W5’s 53rd season of ground-breaking investigative storytelling continues with “Breaking Free”, a compelling investigation into a decades-long fight by a Manitoba man who continues to maintain his innocence following a 1974 murder conviction. W5, Canada’s most-watched documentary program, returns with all-new episodes this Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. ET on CTV, the CTV app, and CTVNews.ca.

W5 correspondent Avery Haines tells the story of Brian Anderson, an Indigenous man sentenced to life in prison in 1974 after being convicted for murder. Anderson has maintained his innocence all along, insisting that he wasn’t even present at the time of the killing. Innocence Canada has recently filed an application to the federal Ministry of Justice, seeking a review of Anderson’s case. He is currently on parole and living in Winnipeg but under conditions that limit his freedom.

W5’s documentary includes interviews with Anderson as well as his family members, lawyers, and a community social worker, and features clips from a 1978 W5 investigation into the same case. “Breaking Free” reveals an in-depth account of Anderson’s long quest for freedom.

“This week, W5 delivers a deeply personal look at one man’s unwavering claim of innocence and claims that systemic racism may have led to his conviction,” said Anton Koschany, Executive Producer, W5. “The accounts uncovered through one-on-one interviews and our investigation, bring to light a forgotten story from our country’s criminal justice system. We’re proud to deliver this type of powerful, first-person storytelling every week on W5.”

Also this week, in “His Way”, W5’s Beverly Thomson takes viewers behind-the-scenes for an in-depth look at Canadian icon Paul Anka and his six decades of success in pop music. With intimate access to the singer-songwriter’s life and career, this profile showcases how the man who wrote “My Way” continues to build his legacy.

W5 airs Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET beginning Jan. 26 on CTV. Additionally, W5 also airs Saturdays at 10 p.m. on CTV Two and Sundays (see local listings). W5 is also available on demand at CTVNews.ca/W5, and on the CTV and CTV News apps.
