SOS Arandora Star tells the story of the tragic events that led to the sinking of a World War 2 British liner and the incredible rescue of survivors by the Canadian Navy. Setting sail from Liverpool, the Arandora Star was carrying a cargo of internees, classified as enemy aliens by the British government. On July 2, 1940, the vessel was sunk by a German U-boat. The miraculous rescue by Canadian Captain Harry De Wolf and HMCS St. Laurent saved the lives of 800 passengers. Sadly, 750 men still perished that day, of which 446 were British men of Italian ancestry.
“OMNI Television is pleased to bring this documentary to a Canadian audience and help to unveil an important piece of Canadian ethnocultural history,” commented Madeline Ziniak, National Vice President, OMNI Television. “Its timely broadcast premiere helps to mark the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 100th anniversary of the Canadian Navy.”
The story is told through the first hand accounts of a survivor and two crew members of HMCS St. Laurent, accompanied by interviews with community historians and the victims’ family members. Also featured is Maria Serena Balestracci, author of Arandora Star, >From Oblivion to Memory”.
“This extraordinary rescue by the Canadian Navy is most likely one of the greatest sea rescues by a single destroyer in the Second World War and yet it is virtually unknown and unrecognized in Canada” said Anna Chiappa, Producer. “We are grateful to OMNI Television for allowing this piece of Canadian history to be remembered.”
SOS Arandora Star was shot on location in Canada, Italy, Scotland and England.
