Extraordinary Engineering Explored in VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION on Discovery Science

Go inside some of the most secretive facilities in the world with Discovery Science as VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION explores awesome feats of engineering, premiering Tuesday, May 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The three-part series combines unprecedented access and observational documentary techniques with powerful CGI footage that offer insight into groundbreaking engineering projects. Explore the business behind creating the best and most lucrative technology in the face of fierce worldwide competition.

VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION gains exclusive access to three very different British engineering companies that all share something in common – incredibly complex technology and highly-skilled workers. From building nuclear submarines or jumbo jet engines, to firefighting robots and stealth wind turbines at the world’s most secretive companies – each episode reveals how large-scale and complicated engineering projects are planned and executed.

Highlights from VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION include:

VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION – “How to Build a Nuclear Submarine”
Tuesday, May 3 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
Britain’s brand-new submarine is the first of its class – able to circumnavigate the globe without surfacing and as long as a football field. The BAE Systems hand-built submarine features a nuclear engine that will never require refueling for its entire 25-year lifetime. Follow the building and testing of this astute submarine as she prepares to sail into the open sea for the first time.

VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION – “How to Build a Jumbo Jet Engine”
Tuesday, May 10 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
The most complicated and powerful jet engines in the world are manufactured at the Rolls Royce factory in Derby, England. The 11,000-person factory is responsible for putting jumbo jets in the sky. Their skills have made flying the safest mode of transport and their innovations allow airplanes to become bigger, cleaner, greener and quieter in the future. Follow the engine assembly of their new “Trent 1000” engine fixed to a Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane – a flight which could secure deals worth millions of dollars.

VOYAGES OF CONSTRUCTION – “How to Build Britain’s Secret Engineers”
Tuesday, May 17 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
If you need to build a top-secret piece of equipment in the U.K., there’s only one place to go: QinetiQ. Follow the top secret British company on a global journey as it reveals a handful of its secretive projects – like the adaptation of military stealth technology for civilian wind turbines. How each project works and what is does is explained through computer graphics stripping away the technology and putting it back together again to give an incredible insight into the technological race to build the best.
