Design Canada  *Canadian broadcast premiere

Friday April 19 @ 9:pm ET&PT

A story never told. Until now. Through the lens of graphic design, Design Canada follows the transformation of a nation from a colonial outpost to a vibrant and multicultural society. The biggest question we ask ourselves as a country is “what makes us Canadian?” What defines a national identity, is it an anthem? A flag? Is it a logo or icon? How do these elements shape who we are? In the 1960s and 1970s, these questions were answered by an innovative group of Canadian designers, who used design to unify the nation.

Beyond the Spectrum *documentary Channel premiere

Sunday April 28 @ 9:pm ET&PT

Oskar’s Story takes us into both the complicated story of autism as well as the story of parents trying to figure out a path forward. What makes Oskar’s parents so special is that, from the very beginning, they believed that there was more to treating autism than simply eliminating so-called ‘autistic behaviours.’ For example, in the sample scenes included with this report, we see Carly and Stef trying to figure out why Oskar almost compulsively wipes his saliva on the surfaces around him. While they would like to stop this behaviour, they believe first and foremost that it should be understood as a clue. They suspect he is actually gaining some sort of visual feedback that is important to him in some way, and this could be a key to understanding and meeting Oskar’s needs in a more profound way.

Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning monarch in British history, but it came as a surprise to many. She wasn’t born in line for the crown and at age ten her life was turned upside down when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated, catapulting her into the position of heir to one of the world’s great empires. At the age of 21 she broadcast to the people of Britain and the Commonwealth that “my whole life shall be devoted to your service.” It was a pledge she renewed 60 years later at her Diamond Jubilee. During her reign she has experienced family tragedy and triumph, often having to choose between supporting her family and doing her duty as monarch. She has appointed 13 Prime Ministers, while steadfastly remaining above the political fray. She’s transformed the British Empire into the new commonwealth of diverse and independent nations. This eight-part series interviews the Queen’s Prime Ministers, members of the Royal Household and closest friends, to build a uniquely personal picture of Elizabeth, the woman, the mother, the Queen.
