JHL Productions Inc. (JHL) is pleased to announce the Canadian broadcast premiere of “My Mother, the Nazi Midwife and Me” on The Documentary Channel, May 14 and May 18, 2013 at 8pm.
JHL has also just partnered with Quadra Film Coalition of Paris, France for the international broadcast distribution rights to My Mother, the Nazi Midwife and Me.
Co-produced by Jane Hawtin and Gina Roitman, My Mother, the Nazi Midwife and Me unearths a chilling story that time has almost buried – the systematic murder of 52 Jewish babies in a Displaced Persons camp in the American military zone after the end of the Second World War.
Growing up, Montreal writer and poet Gina Roitman would not believe the disturbing stories her mother recounted about why she had refused to give birth to Gina in the Pocking-Waldstadt DP camp near Passau, Germany. “Discovering how blind I was to the truth, changed me profoundly and set me on a path I have been avoiding all my life,” says Gina.
As detailed in My Mother, the Nazi Midwife and Me, years after her mother’s death, a startling encounter with a Nazi whistleblower lures Gina back to Passau; to the place where she was born, the town that Hitler once called home. After meeting with young German students who decry the Nazi stereotypes they must endure, Gina finally tracks down the now very old survivor who knows the truth behind her mother’s horrible tales. He berates Gina for almost waiting too long and then tells her the story of babies killed by a Nazi midwife after the war.
“We believe this film is not only a piece of history that needed to be recorded but an affirmation that to move forward, reconciliation is vital”, says producer Jane Hawtin.
