The awards have been handed out, today’s brightest stars have come and gone, and the overnight ratings are in: MuchMusic’s broadcast of the 2011 MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS is the most-watched broadcast in MuchMusic history! More than one million viewers (1.009 million) watched from 9-11 p.m. last night, making it the most-watched non-news program on all of Canadian television last night, up 10.4% compared to last year’s record-breaker in total viewers (914,000)*, and jumping an incredible 67% in the key A18-34 demo. Viewership also increased by 11% in P12 – 34. When the 8 p.m. PT west coast broadcast is included, the overall audience jumps to 1.2 million viewers. Nearly three million unique viewers (2.8 million) watched some or all of the broadcast.
On muchmusic.com, fans kept the party going with more than 375,000 unique visitors on June 19, making yesterday the biggest single-day audience ever on the site, a 125% increase over the 2010 MMVAs.**
The MMVAs was the #1 program on Canadian specialty television yesterday among the key demos P12 – 17 (144,000), P12-34 (478,000), P18-34 (334,000), and P18-49 (580,000), as well as F12-17, F12-34, F18-34, F18-49. It was also the most-watched program in its time slot across all of Canadian television for T12-17.
The 2011 MMVAS RED CARPET SPECIAL, which preceded the main show, was viewed by a total of 642,200 on MuchMusic, E! and CP24. MuchMusic’s broadcast increased 19% from last year.
“There is no party on the planet like the MMVAs, and the 2011 MMVAs took the party to a whole new level,” said Sheila Sullivan, Executive Producer, 2011 MUCHMUSIC VIDEO AWARDS. “The audience at MuchMusic HQ in Toronto took part in a truly special, live experience, but it’s the viewers across Canada who have proved that MuchMusic delivers the ultimate in fan access – whether on TV, or online or in person, Canadians got up-close-and-personal with the Canadian video music scene in a biggest and best way possible.”
More than 10,000 fans descended on MuchMusic HQ to celebrate with an A-list group of stars, including Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Colin Farrell, The Black Keys, Snoop Dogg, Avril Lavigne, as well as co-host Selena Gomez and scores of other artists and celebs performing, presenting, and accepting awards.
The record breaking continues for the 2011 MMVAs with fans showing up in record numbers via social media. Fans added more than 20,000 new Likes to MuchMusic’s Facebook page during the two hour broadcast, pushing MuchMusic’s total number of Likes to more than 845,000. On Twitter, 42,424 MMVAs-related tweets resulted in four of the Top 10 trending topics worldwide on Sunday between 8 and 11 p.m. ET.
