HBO Canada’s May Highlights

The new seasons of True Blood, Hung and Entourage are finally here!

TRUE BLOOD – SEASON 3
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO ORIGINAL SERIES)
Sunday, June 13 at 9 p.m.
As the third season of HBO’s sexy, scary and seductive series from Alan Ball debuts, Sookie Stackhouse is on the hunt for her kidnapped 174-year-old vampire lover and fiancé Bill Compton who disappeared in the season two finale. Sookie desperately tries to locate Bill with the assistance (and often hindrance) of friends, family and locals including: her newly inspired brother Jason, shape-shifting boss Sam Merlotte, in-mourning pal Tara Thornton, Tara’s vamp-linked cousin Lafayette, on-the-wagon detective Andy Bellefleur, vampire sheriff Eric Northman and teen vamp Jessica. Among human and undead interlopers in season three is the Vampire King of Mississippi, Russell Edgington, and his followers – a pack of vicious werewolves who feed on vampire blood.

Starring Anna Paquin, Stephen Moyer, Alexander Skarsgård, Ryan Kwanten Rutina Wesley, Sam Trammell, Nelsan Ellis, Deborah Ann Woll and Evan Rachel Wood. Joining the cast for season three are Denis O’Hare, Joe Manganiello, Brit Morgan, Grant Bowler, Lauren Bowles, Marshall Allman, Alfre Woodard, James Frain and Kevin Alejandro.

HUNG – SEASON 2
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO ORIGINAL SERIES)
Sunday, June 27 at 10 p.m.
Set in the (still) recession-plagued suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, the second season of HBO’s half-hour comedy series Hung continues to revolve around the unorthodox efforts of divorced teacher/coach Ray Drecker to generate extra cash – by selling his “winning tool” to desperate women. At the end of the first season, Ray and his unlikely pimp, Tanya Skagle, saw their two-sided operation had grown a new head after slick “life coach” Lenore Bernard talked Ray into making her a co-pimp, devastating Tanya in the process. While Lenore continues to push a debonair version of hooker Ray on her upscale clients, Tanya looks to prove, to both Ray and herself, that she has the “right stuff” when it comes to being a successful, and far more ethical, pimp than Lenore. To complicate matters, Ray’s ex-wife is losing touch with herself, her new husband, and the kids they share and Ray’s teaching colleague has uncovered his secret – and wants in. Created by Colette Burson and Dmitry Lipkin. Starring Thomas Jane, Jane Adams, Anne Heche, Rebecca Creskoff, Eddie Jemison, Charlie Saxon and Sianoa Smit-Mcphee.

ENTOURAGE – SEASON 7
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO ORIGINAL SERIES)
Sunday, June 27 at 10:30 p.m.
Executive produced by Mark Wahlberg and created by Doug Ellin, HBO’s hit half-hour comedy series is back for a seventh season. After an accident during the filming of his latest action flick, incandescent young Hollywood actor Vincent Chase develops a new lease on life that makes him even more difficult to manage. Meanwhile, his agent Ari Gold is heading an entertainment-agency behemoth, and his three hometown buddies – manager Eric, half-brother/actor Drama, and pal Turtle – are still along for the ride and must decide which steps to take to map out their own futures, both personally and professionally. Starring Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Kevin Dillon, Jerry Ferrara, Rex Lee and Golden Globe® and three-time Emmy®-winner Jeremy Piven.

BROAD STREET BULLIES
(NETWORK PREMIERE; HBO SPORTS DOCUMENTARY)
Wednesday, June 2 at 8 p.m.
This HBO Sports Documentary looks at the legendary, controversial Philadelphia Flyers Stanley Cup championship hockey teams of the 1970s, who rose to prominence under the guidance of shrewd coach Freddie Shero. The documentary tells the backstory of one of pro sports’ most polarizing teams whose bold, aggressive style sparked controversy and criticism as they won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975.

FOR NEDA
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO ORIGINAL DOCUMENTARY)
Monday, June 14 at 9 p.m.
Directed by Antony Thomas, this 70-minute HBO original documentary remembers Neda Agha-Soltan, a young woman who was shot and killed on June 20, 2009 during protests against the presidential elections in Iran. Within hours of Agha-Soltan’s death, cell phone photographs of her blood-stained face were held aloft by crowds protesting in Tehran and across the world, turning Neda into an international symbol for an Iranian revolution. With exclusive access to her family inside Iran, the documentary delves into the heart of who Neda was and what she stood for, illuminating the larger Iranian struggle for democratic freedoms through her powerful story.

PRIMO
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO ORIGINAL FILM)
Wednesday, June 23 at 8 p.m.
Adapted by the distinguished English actor-playwright Antony Sher from the memoir of Holocaust survivor Primo Levi, Primo is a one-man drama with a world of meaning beyond its deceptively simple format. In quiet but unsparing language, Primo Levi narrates the story of how he, an Italian Jewish partisan, was captured by the Nazis and sent to Auschwitz. In the Concentration camp Primo and the other prisoners are systematically stripped of possessions, identity and pride, and fed the barest minimum possible so they can work at forced labor in freezing temperatures.

ROBERT KLEIN: UNFAIR AND UNBALANCED
(WORLD PREMIERE; HBO COMEDY SPECIAL)
Saturday, June 12 at 10 p.m.
Starring in his ninth stand-up special, comedian/actor Robert Klein delivers an all-new, hour-long stand-up routine. Taped in front of a live audience on April 10 at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts’ Amaturo Theatre in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Klein takes on: bipartisan gridlock in Washington; obstructionism for the sake of obstructionism; image instead of substance; Congressmen running off to Argentina rather than running the country; couch potatoes with two waistlines; out-sourcing tech jobs to India; and the average American’s fascination with pop culture but his/her total lack of interest in grappling with truly important issues. Also, backed by a symphony orchestra onstage, Klein will belt out newly minted musical numbers about such topics as medical marijuana, Barack Obama and his continued inability to stop his leg from shaking – at least when he’s singing the blues.
