Two-time Golden Globe nominee and star of My Name is Earl Jason Lee stars in an unusual new police dramedy Memphis Beat, coming to Super Channel this fall. Canada’s only national pay television network premieres the series exclusively for Canadians Sept. 9 at 9 p.m. ET in vivid HD.
Lee brings humour and soul to the serious business of police work as Dwight Hendricks, a quirky detective with spot-on instincts but a loose, relaxed style of police work, that doesn’t jive with his demanding new boss, Lt. Tanya Rice (played by Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard).
Dwight ignores police protocol, preferring to follow the wisdom of Elvis. Yet this quintessential Southern gentleman may very well win over his by-the-book boss to a Memphis state of mind with unrelenting politeness and a passion for the people and soul of the city.
Working alongside a bumbling, self-proclaimed protégé – an officer trying to juggle work and raising two teenage girls – and another who uses Chickasaw tribal wisdom in his police work; Dwight deals with the gritty underbelly of his beloved city every day. But he always finds time for his mother and his passion. Almost every night, you can find him on stage at his favourite hangout to perform a legendary song or two.
In addition to a rich soundtrack of classic Memphis blues, every show features original music written for the series by Grammy Award winning blues musician Keb’ Mo’.
Juliette Lewis will guest-star on the series.
