Manchester United was dominant in their round of 16 series with AC Milan dispatching the Serie A powerhouse 7-2 on aggregate. Wayne Rooney was the key contributor for United scoring twice in a 3-2 win at San Siro and netting two more in the second leg at Old Trafford. Rooney has scored in each of the last five matches he has played for the Red Devils. The star striker has eight goals in those five matches. Rooney was last held goalless on February 10 when United and Aston Villa finished in a 1-1 draw in a league match at Villa Park.
Bayern Munich’s chances of repeating their 2001 quarter final Champions League win over Manchester United en route to their fourth title hinge on the fitness of two star players. Dutch national Arjen Robben’s status is uncertain after he strained a calf muscle in a league match Saturday. Robben’s teammate Franck Ribery has battled tendonitis this season and is not at 100 per cent fitness but will be heavily relied on to produce if Robben is not available Tuesday.
Inter Milan won their only two Champions League titles in back-to-back seasons (1963-64 and 1964-1965). The current leaders in Italy’s top domestic league Serie A dispatched English club Chelsea 3-1 on aggregate in the round of 16.
CSKA Moscow carry the hopes of Russia as they try to end the nation’s Champions League drought. No Russian club has reached a Champions League final. Moscow advanced thanks to a 2-1 road win over Spanish side Sevilla after the two clubs played to a 1-1 draw in the opening leg in Moscow.
