TV GORD’S WHAT’S ON for the week of January 1-7, 2017

All Times Eastern

Most regular series return with new episodes this week, and there are some interesting additions and returns, including Bones, Sherlock, Grimm and Sleepy Hollow. Also, Arnold Schwarzenegger takes over the Celebrity Apprentice. Happy New Year and happy viewing!

Sunday

Fawlty Towers – 9am to 3:40pm on Spark – Complete Series Marathon

I don’t usually mention marathons, but this is arguably the funniest sitcom to come out of Britain, with John Cleese as the perpetually frustrated owner of an Inn, Basil Fawlty. Only 12 episodes were made, and they are all presented here.

To Tell The Truth – 9pm on ABC – 2nd Season Premiere

The Mick – 8pm on Fox/City – Series Premiere

Kaitlin Olson stars as an irresponsible grafter who becomes the guardian of her sister’s unruly children when she and her husband flee the country to avoid arrest on federal fraud charges. This comedy gets a special New Year’s Day tryout before moving to its regular time slot on Tuesdays at 8:31pm.

Ransom – 8:30 to 9:30pm on CBS/Global – Series Premiere

Hostage negotiator Eric Beaumont and his team save lives using insight into criminal behavior; Maxine is eager to prove herself but harbors a dangerous secret from her past. (Episode two airs on Saturday at 8pm.)

Pure Genius – 9:30 to 10:30pm on CBS/Global – Special day and time

Conviction – 10pm on ABC/CTV – New day and time

Roast Battle II – 11pm on Comedy – Series Premiere

After last year’s summer Roast Battle, Jeff Ross is back to pit comedians against each other in a no-holds-barred competition. This round is schedule to run on Sunday nights in January, with the finals on the 29th.

Sherlock on Masterpiece – 9 to 10:30pm on PBS – 4th Season Premiere

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman return with three new adventures starting in 2017, this one centred around the birth of Watson’s first child.

Monday

The Bachelor – 8 to 10:01pm on ABC/Omni2 – 21st Season Premiere

The competition begins in earnest with this episode, but there’s also a one-hour profile of Bachelor Nick on New Year’s Day at 8pm. Also on Monday, a special prime time edition of Jimmy Kimmel Live follows at 10pm on ABC with Nick Viall as Jimmy’s guest. That JKL is also repeated at 11:35pm.

The New Celebrity Apprentice – 8 to 10pm on NBC/W – 15th Season Premiere

With Donald Trump otherwise occupied, Arnold Schwarzenegger takes over as host—or The Governor—as he will be addressed on this latest round of 16 competing celebrities.

Antiques Roadshow – 8 to 9pm on PBS – 21st Season Premiere

Tuesday

Bones – 9:01 to 10pm on Fox/City – 12th and Final Season Premiere

Wednesday

Match Game – 10pm on ABC/CTV – 2nd Season Premiere

Thursday

Nashville – 9 to 11pm on W – 5th Season Premiere

Rescued from ABC cancellation by CMT in the U.S., this country music drama first shows up in Canada on W, with two episodes running back-to-back. (It will also be on CMT Canada starting this Sunday at 8pm.)

Friday

Grimm – 8pm on NBC/CTV – 6th Season Premiere

Sleepy Hollow – 9pm on Fox/CTV Two – 4th Season Premiere

Fail City – 8pm on City – 3rd Season Premiere

Greatest Party Story Ever and Other Epic Tales – 9pm on MTV – 2nd Season Premiere

Emerald City – 9 to 11pm on NBC – Series Premiere (Two Episodes)

This ten-episode fantasy drama from Shaun Cassidy Productions (American Gothic) is based on the Land of Oz book series by L. Frank Baum and takes an alternate, dark and edgy version of Dorothy’s adventures in Oz. Vincent D’Onofrio plays The Wizard.
