They came, they sang, they grinded, and they twerked! Last night’s first-ever MTV and Much simulcast of the 2013 MTV VIDEO MUSIC AWARDS, live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, was the #1 program of the night in Canada across all specialty channels among Total Viewers, Teens 12-34, and Adults 18-49. With a total overnight audience of 606,000 viewers, the simulcast increased the audience of the 2012 VMAs on Much by more than 50% and reached over two million viewers.

On home soil, MTV offered fans a Canadian perspective on the VMAs as hosts Aliya-Jasmine Sovani and Scott Willatsdelivered the dish to viewers, with live hits throughout the red carpet and show, from MTV’s HQ in downtown Toronto.
In the Twitterverse, #VMAs hit the #1 spot in Canada (at 8:19 p.m.) before the show had even started, and at one point, VMA-related trends occupied 9 out of 10 spots on the Canada trends list. Throughout show day, there were 66,763 tweets in Canada that specifically mentioned the VMAs (using either VMA, VMAs, or VMAs2013), making an estimated 79.4 million impressions.
Last night’s VMAs were filled with over-the-top performances, including superstar Lady Gaga opening the show with her latest single “Applause”, to Toronto’s very own Drake performing “Started From The Bottom” for the first time on television.Justin Timberlake delivered a 16-minute performance that featured a highly anticipated reunion with N’Sync. Also, Miley Cyrus made headlines when she joined Robin Thicke for a risqué duet of his hit “Blurred Lines”, while Katy Perry closed the show from under the Brooklyn Bridge with a fierce performance of “Roar”.
Justin Timberlake took home the most awards this year with four Moonmen, including Video of the Year for “Mirrors” and the prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, while Macklemore & Ryan Lewis nabbed three statues. Taylor Swiftpicked up Best Female Video for “I Knew You Were Trouble” and Selena Gomez won Best Pop Video for “Come & Get It”.
